Graduation Snowstorms to Shenanigans

Lakewood High Class of 75 Graduation

The Wild Ride of Lakewood High’s Class of 1975

It was May 30th, 1975 — the big day for over 500 of us Tigers, ready to toss our caps and charge into the world. The plan was a grand ceremony at Jefferson County Stadium. Some say it was initially supposed to be Red Rocks (because, hey, how cool would that have been?), but depending on who you ask, the story varies. One version even blames rogue fireworks at rehearsal for nixing that dream. Truth or myth? Who knows! What we do know is this: Mother Nature had her plans.

Instead of stadium glory under the Colorado sky, we got 12 inches of snow and a backup plan — the hot, stuffy, echoing Gym. Not quite the picture-perfect sendoff we imagined, but it was memorable for sure. To keep things “efficient” (translation: chaotic), they lined us up by height instead of last name. So, instead of sitting next to our alphabetical buddies, we stood in order like a human height chart.

After getting our diplomas, the faculty told us to leave the Gym and turn in our gowns immediately — but the shorter among us weren’t about to miss our tall friends’ moment of glory. So we clustered in the back, creating a friendly little rebellion. Parents started filing out, and by the time the Reverend gave the closing benediction, he was talking to the janitor and a few stragglers.

Still, we were graduates!

This graduation officially unleashed the Lakewood High Class of ’75 on the world.

And, of course, the night wasn’t over. After we had our diplomas handed out and the gowns turned in (well, mostly), the celebrations kicked off in full swing. Some of us headed home for heartfelt family gatherings — cake, hugs, and lots of flashbulbs. Others met up with close friends for backyard barbecues or pizza parties. And then there was the after-party at Danny Byrne’s legendary shack (or was it a garage?). Wherever it was, it was loud, a little wild, and unforgettable. Everyone celebrated their way — but the joy was the same: We made it.

But here’s the thing…

Time flies. It’s been 50 years (yes, fifty), and now it’s time to come together again — to laugh at the memories, reconnect with old friends, and remember what it meant to be a Lakewood Tiger.
